Throw the Bums Out. . .

bums1No, not those bums, these bums!

A friend of mine who likes to go to Bryant Park most mornings and feed the squirrels told me that he couldn’t do anymore it because a bunch of people were drinking where he likes to sit.  We took a walk down to where the horseshoe pits are around 10:00 this morning and took a look.  Heck, I wouldn’t sit there either!

There were 4 very drunk guys yelling and drinking in the little gazebo.  They were very intimidating.

Bum2

Later as we walked a bit north toward the Bandshell we ran into a friend with her young son.  As we chatted 3 of the drunks staggered to the bathrooms near where we were standing.  Our friend had to call her son to her side to keep him out of their path.

It is a shame that our parks are spoiled by this type of thing.  It often gets to the point that as a parent I have to think twice about where I take my daughter for a walk.

Tomorrow morning I am going to see if they are there again, and if they are I’m calling the Sheriff  like I should have done today.

NAD2This past weekend we visited the Neighborhood Art District in Boynton Beach, located in an industrial area right by the railroad tracks off  Boynton Beach Blvd.

The Art District has been there for at least the past 15 years.  My older daughter Tessa had her first art showing there back when she was in high school.  It is a mix of operating commercial and industrial businesses and artists. In many cases industrial equipment doubles as a backdrop for the art.

I lived very near to the Boynton Neighborhood Art District for many years and saw first hand how it helped clean up what was once a rundown part of town.

Here are some photos we took there:

Here in Lake Worth we also have an opportunity to encourage a Neighborhood Art District, specifically on South H St. between Lake Ave. and 6th. Ave.

There is already an art gallery opening  in this building in the fall:

NAD16And a walk through the neighborhood shows that it would be ideal for an Art District.  Many buildings that are unoccupied and contribute only to blight would be well suited for artist space.

NAD10 This is just the type of thing that will help transform the west side of downtown and is well suited for a town like ours.  So what can we do to encourage this type of  “development”?

Just How Tall. . .

There seems to be quite a bit of fussing going on regarding the actual height of the Lucerne building.  Well, using scientific methodology I measured the building using the international unit of measurement  “Toms” to put this issue to rest and allow everybody to move on.

high The Lucerne is ten Toms high.  In this photo it appears that the Toms are actually above the top of the building.  However the uppermost Tom is aligned to the tallest part of the building that is out of frame in this photo.

Per the International Institute of Measurement located in Geneva a Tom in sandals is the equivalent of 74 inches.  Hence ten Toms equates to 740 inches or 61 feet 8 inches.

So there you have it the Lucerne Building is precisly 61 feet 8 inches tall.   Now that that’s settled, can we please move on to something else?

There’s A Lot To Like About Lake Worth. Brunch At The Organic Music Cafe.

omcb4Donna and I have been to the Organic Music Cafe at 332 North Dixie Highway quite a few times but had never tried their brunch.  Well, let me tell you we waited too long as it was the best brunch either one of us have had in a long time.  You would never know that you were right on Dixie Highway, the Cafe is a calm and inviting oasis.

omcb3

Ashleigh Ruckert was playing the singing bowls up on the stage.  If you have never heard singing bowls before you are in for a marvelous experience.  Their soft tones encourage you to relax and is a welcome change from the ubiquitous jazz played at way too many brunches.

Organic Music Cafe’s host Saxz custom made some white wine mimosas  while we looked over the menu.  They were so good!

omcb2

You might think that the Organic Music Cafe is the type of place that’s only for the  Birkenstock wearing, sprout eating crowd where you can only get vegetarian or vegan food.  Well, that’s not at all the case.  While Donna and I both ended up having delicious vegetarian entree’s, there is shrimp, fish and meat on the menu as well.  The cheeses, mushrooms, dates, salad, bread and everything else we had were fabulous.

So if you want to experience a charming  place with soothing music and outstanding food while spending your money locally, visit the Organic Music Cafe for Sunday Brunch!

No matter what your feelings are about Javier Del Sol running for Mayor, you have to hand it to him for staying true to his values.  We spotted this campaign sign for him today and if you look closely you can see that it is made from a recycled Cara Jennings sign from the last election.

1JDSOkay, I’m not endorsing him for mayor.  But I do admire his commitment to recycling.
