The “Early Sign” post regarding Carla Blockson’s sign on Dixie Highway along with her position as Vice Chair of the Community Relations Board has tempers flaring on Tom’s Page.  We’ve just reached 50 comments, a new record.

Judging by the interest (to put it mildly), and the equally strong comments on Gail Shepherd’s article (click here to view) about Lisa Maxwell and Cara Jennings, we are in for a bumpy campaign season.

And, we are learning some great new metaphors along the way.

The view from North J Street as the X-37 unmanned spacecraft rockets into space from Cape Canaveral.   Atop the booster is what can best be described as a mini space shuttle.  The Pentagon is being pretty tight lipped about the true purpose of the X-37, stating that it is a research vehicle to test long duration space flight coupled with short relaunch turnaround times.

Tom’s Page spotted this sign on Dixie Highway.  Carla Blockson  announced back in February that she intended to run for the district 2 seat on the City Commission.  The sign is conspicuously missing the usual requirements of the position the candidate is running for or that it is a paid political advertisement.

Ms. Blockson is currently the vice chair of the Community Relations Board.  Even though she does not have to resign from the CRB until she qualifies as a candidate in August it is unsettling that she chooses to remain vice chair while apparently actively campaigning.

While the wording of the rule is on her side, the spirit of the rule is clearly to avoid conflicts of interest.  It would put her in a better light if she followed the spirit of the rule.

Publix Works

Work on the infrastructure for the new Publix begun and is in full swing.  Parts North J Street and 3rd Avenue North are closed as crews dig up the roads to install new service lines.

Along with the installation of new utilities the decaying and unsafe sidewalks are slated to be replaced as well.  It has been a long road to get our downtown Publix, and now that work begun it’s almost harder to wait until it opens.

A new water line is prepared for installation.

Click here to read Wes Blackman’s post regarding the “time delay” in the publication of the City Manager’s weekly report.

I think that we can all agree that the City Manger’s report should be distributed to the public on Friday instead of waiting until certain Commissioners have had a chance to give it the “once over” before posting it on Monday.
