Halloween Street Scene. . .

If you ventured downtown this weekend you saw scary creatures haunting just about every corner.  I don’t mean the political candidates and local elected officials, although they were out in force too.

The Halloween Street Scene appears to have been a resounding success.  Bands, parades and events filled downtown from Dixie to the Cultural Plaza and there was something for every age group to enjoy.  Even dogs got into the action with a great pet costume contest with lots of participants and even more spectators.

I spoke with several downtown merchants who were delighted with the turnout and the traffic it generated.  A stroll down the avenue revealed busy restaurants and shops Friday and Saturday.

My daughter Deanna had a blast Saturday afternoon Trick or Treating at the shops, dancing to the music and watching the pet contest.

Halloween Street Scene looks poised to become a signature event for our downtown, one that will bring people from all over to visit Lake Worth.

Late Afternoon In The Garden Of Good And Evil

Yesterday afternoon there was what was billed as “Press Conference to expose candidate’s ties to hate groups and affirm Lake Worth as a City of racial diversity and tolerance” held at the Cultural Plaza downtown.  It really was more of a rally than a press conference.  While the organizers went out of their way to repeatedly proclaim it was not political, the meeting had strong political messages from both sides of the controversy surrounding candidate for district 1 commissioner Scot Maxwell.

The press was there and sheriffs deputies made their presence known in increasing numbers as the afternoon wore on.  A bullhorn wielding Mary Lindsey repeatedly  interrupted speakers and was confronted several times by people trying to stop her.  Several small confrontations as well as many animated discussions took place all through the event.

In the end it was impossible to divine who was good and who was evil.

Taking Credit Where None Is Due. . .

This e-mail from a member of the Democratic Club was forwarded to me this evening.

Subject: falsehood of Democratic endorsement

Harvey, please send this our to our membership email lists and to Terri Rizzo at the DEC also. Folks need to know of this deceit.

I am ashamed of this as we emphasized that we were not endorsing anyone to the candidates at our forum.

On September 15th the Board of the Lake Worth Democratic Club decided not to endorse any of the candidates for Lake Worth offices. In the past we have not endorsed and we continued this practice. We realize that our members were supporting various candidates and chose not to endorse anyone. On October 19th we held a candidate forum as a service to the community as we have done for the last several years. To repeat,  we did not endorse any Lake Worth candidate for mayor and the statement on Laurence McNamara’s campaign flyer saying that he is “co-endorsed by the Democratic Club” is a falsehood. Please be advised.
